Service to others has always been a core part of Scouting. From the slogan “Do a Good Turn Daily” to the phrase in the Scout Oath “to help other people at all times,” Scouting has encouraged youth for over a hundred years to develop a desire to serve their community, nation, and world. Throughout the years, Scouts have stepped up to serve America in times of need: collecting scrap during World War II, carrying out major service projects for the U.S. Forest Service as part of the OA’s ArrowCorps5, and giving millions of service hours every year as part of Eagle Scout and Venturing Summit Award Service Projects.
Community Service Is a Key Part of Scouting
Making community service a part of your pack, troop, or crew’s overall program is a true win-win for all involved. The community benefits, as organizations or individuals receive valuable help from Scouts. It gives your Scouts and unit the opportunity to earn service hours for awards, rank advancement, and Journey to Excellence. And, perhaps most importantly, it teaches your youth valuable lifelong lessons about being involved in their community and the benefits that can be provided by volunteerism.
Did You Know? Reporting Your Service Hours Is IMPORTANT!
Just about every weekend, a Scouting unit is performing invaluable service to the community. In fact, service projects are an important part of Journey to Excellence for your unit, district, and council. But did you know that it’s crucially important to report your service hours? In order for your service to count towards Journey to Excellence, you need to report it on this website. This helps the council to know just how much service is being provided to the community (a statistic we can all take pride in!) and allows both your unit and the council to rack up valuable points for JTE. So don’t keep your service to yourself… start reporting it today!
